History
The Memorial to the Victims of Communism and to Resistance is represented by the museum found in the former political prison of and by the International Centre of Studies on Communism, headquartered in Bucharest. The main goal of the memorial is restore and to preserve the memory of a number of peoples, especially the Romanian people who, throughout half a century, was taught false history.
In 1897, Austro-Hungarian authorities built the Sighet prisons which, after 1918, it operated as a penitentiary for common-law prisoners. After the Second World War, respectively after 1945, the former prisoners and formerly deported from the USSR were repatriated, and in 1948, it became the place of detention of a group of Maramureş pupils, students and peasants. In 1950, more than 100 officials from across the country were brought at the Sighet penitentiary; they included former ministers, academics, economists, militaries, historians, journalists and politicians; heavy penalties had been applied to some of them, while others were not even subject to court proceedings. The conditions in which the prisoners were accommodated were unsanitary, and humiliation and dishonour were part of the extermination agenda.
In 1955, after the Geneva Convention and communist Romania’s entrance in the United Nations, a pardon was given, and some of the political prisoners in the Romanian penitentiaries were released, while some others were transferred to other places, including in house arrest. However, from the approx. 100 prisoners of Sighet, 54 had already died by then. In the following years, other political prisoners were brought to Sighet, especially prisoners "in transit" to the psychiatric ward in the locality. In 1977, the prison was decommissioned and started to deteriorate; it became a manufacture of brooms, then a salt storage area and, finally, a deserted ruin.

In 1993, the ruins of the former prison were taken over by the Civic Academy Foundation, for the purpose of turning it into a Memorial. The building restoration works were completed in the year 2000, and at their completion, each cell was turned in a museum hall that exhibits the great themes of communist repression, the destruction of the Rechtsstaat and its replacement with a totalitarian structure.
In 1997, the Sighet Memorial was declared, by a special law, a development of national concern, and in 1998 it was nominated by the Council of Europe one of the first three place of preservation of European memory, together with the Auschwitz Memorial and the Normandy Peace Memorial.
