Thus, the first major constructions are made in 1780: the mill from the Eastern side of the town and the dam of Macârlău. The first elementary school of the Treasury Vişeu de Sus was founded in 1788, then in 1790 the Watergate of Făina, and the Roman-Catholic Vişeu Parish would be founded. In 1789 took place the inauguration of the first general school, and in 1809 it was built the first lumber factory. Between 1809 - 1810 the Ţipterai neighbourhood was populated and formed.

Nature
Also, the most valuable natural objective from the area Vişeu de Sus is Vaserului Valley which stands out by the existence of mocăniţei (steam train), the main attraction of tourists, with a tradition of tourism in this area dating back to twentieth century. The area enjoys a picturesque natural landscape, unpolluted, with spectacular forms of relief and can be thus valorised in the rest tourism (rest, relaxation), hitchhiking trips, escalades, scientific interest, but also by the numberless possibilities of recreation and relaxation it offers, being an attraction for tourists. The tourist and recreational potential of Vişeu de Sus Town is privileged by:
- The special natural framework owing to the location in the area of Maramureşului Mountains which now belong to the Natural Park with the same name;
- The existence of natural attractions such as the forests spread with rich flora and fauna which represent an excellent reason for the realization of tourist routes for hitchhiking trips in the nature;
- The richness of mineral waters with healing effects from the area of Vinului Valley from the Vaserului Valley basin;
- Preservation of authentic cultural and historical values which represent premises for the development of rural tourism.
Maramureşului mountains natural park
Located in the North-East of Maramureş county, Maramureşului Mountains Natural Park has a surface of 148,850 ha and is the largest natural park in Romania. The central part and the highest part of the chain of mountains crosses the park from North-West to South-East and comprises the most representative peaks: Pop Ivan (1937 m), Farcău (1957 m, the highest of Maramureşului Mountains), Mihăiescu (1918 m), Pietrosu Bărdău (1850 m), Toroiaga (1930), Jupania (1853 m), Fântâna Stanchii (1726 m) and Cearcănu (1846 m).The mountain relief of the park is very varied, depending on the method of formation and the geological era in which it was formed. Thus, we find here glacial relief, periglacial relief, volcanic, structural relief and areas with relief developed in crystalline and chalky rocks. Thanks to the diversity and importance of the relief forms here, in the park there are four protected areas: Sâlhoi-Zâmbroslavile Cliffs (5 ha), Cornu Nedeii - Ciungii Bălăsânii (800 ha), Farcău-Vinderel–Mihailecu (100 ha) and the Glade with daffodils Tomnatec-Sehleanu (100 ha). Apart from these, in the area there are over 30 caves of low sizes and a few waterfalls.
Flora is representative for Eastern Carpathians and includes a large number of endemic plants of Carpathians as well as many rare species or species protected by law (arnica montana, globeflower, edelweiss, lady's slipper, campanula, sundew.
Fauna is very rich with a large number of rare, protected and endemic elements (Carpathian bear, lynx, mink, wolf, marmot, boar, otter, wood grouse, Lyrurus tetrix, wagtail, eagle, hawk, blackbird, raven, hazel grouse).
The rivers and lakes from Maramureşului Mountains Park shelter very rare species in the country or endemic to the area: taimen, trout, broad snout, grayling, European Chub.
Vaserului Valley
The most valuable natural objective from Vişeu de Sus area is Vaserului Valley which stands out by the existence of mocăniţei (steam train), the main attraction of tourists, with a tourist tradition dating back to 20th century.Vaserului Valley comprises a huge forested area, which is not inhabited up to the camps of workers and the only way of access is the forestry railway. As area which is part of Natural Park “Maramureşului Mountains“, Vaserului Valley is under European protection, its forestry use is allowed with the observance of environmental obligations which assure that the forest will be preserved at its current capacity. The forestry railway of narrow track gauge (760 mm) offers the lovers of railway trips and not only very special landscapes along a route of about 50 km. Along the line one can discover the most picturesque forms of nature: steep banks which start right near the line, secular forests or massive cliffs crossed by tunnels.
Vaserului Valley is increasingly becoming a destination sought for its hunting tourism. Depending on the hunting season, here you can hunt stags (between 1st September and 15th December), boars (between 1st August and 15th February), bears (only with special approval) or wood grouse (between 1st April and 15th May).
Vinului Valley
Since the nineteenth century, in Vinului Valley there were consecrated 100 springs of mineral water or „borcut”, as it is locally called. The mineral springs on Vinului Valley, „La căldare”, „La Ştiubei”, „Izvorul lui Victor” and especially the spring known as „Gulaci” were in the beginning of twentieth century parts of a balneary and climatic resort and continue to have a huge potential of valorization, by the quality of waters and well-being properties (of 12,7 g/l and a concentration of 2,26 g/l CO2) , but also for the rare beauty of the natural landscape and the peace and quiet of the place.History
Located in the very heart of Maramureş, Vişeu de Sus is one of its representative settlements, both historically and by the wealth of traditions and cultural heritage. Part of an ethnographic area that treasures more legends, beliefs and traditions than the entire area of Maramureş, Vişeu de Sus is a significant exponent of the Maramureş dwelling, the two key elements: "water" and "wood", defining both the overall appearance of the town, as well as the traditional crafts.
The ampleness of the forest in the mountains, keeping watch over the town, leaves its print on local life, being an essential part of the community culture and civilization, woodworking having marked the local architecture as a profound science. Being located in the mountains belt, relatively isolated from the rest of the country, by the typical mountain grounds, the area has kept some traditional characters of life in Maramureş, the influences of modern development being experienced rather later than in other areas.

Vişeu de Sus has known a somewhat different evolution from the rest of Maramureş, experiencing an extraordinary economic boom after arrival of the Saxon miners and then of the settlers from Zips, in the 1770s. This flourishing development has attracted other settlers, from Salzburg, Tirol, Salzkommengut and Gurunden, which resulted in the consolidation of a multiethnic community; 18 ethnic groups being found in town at one time, a solid base for weaving stories, now part of the local mythology.
Many of the local customs and traditions are still related to the “ţipţers” present in the area. For them, Christmas is still the most important holiday of the year, which is why the houses are embellished with fir branches and the entire community gathers on Christmas Eve for the service that begins at midnight. After it ends caroling begins, a tradition involving the whole family, and the carols sung still contain “ţipţer” words.

Cultural events
National Festival of Satire and Humor Smiles in April
Date of organization: last weekend in April
The competition is organized in three sections: epigrams on given topics, parody and book of humor (epigrams, fables, short stories, etc.). Within the festival events and several shows, complementary to the actual contest are organized: comic recitals, epigrammatic tournaments, book and magazines launches, and visits to touristic attractions in the surroundings. The message of this festival is: "Humor is the most efficient and truthful human means of socialization" and it addresses an intellectual public, who knows to appreciate the subtleties contained by such writings.
One of the strengths is that the festival manages to bring to Vişeu top names in the field, both as participants and as a jury, which allows the public access to the best humorous literary creations.
National Festival of Literature and Folklore Spring Harmonies
Date of organization: last weekend in May
The festival is divided into two main sections, literature and folklore, and it carries on in this format since the first edition.
Literature Day is centered on the award ceremony of the literary contest, poetry debut (volume in manuscript) and volume of poetry. The first part is addressed mainly to the young, pupils and students. The contest of volume in manuscript is open to all creators, irrespective of age, who have not yet made their debut with a volume. Also, a contest of poetry volumes published since the previous edition is organized. It is open to all creators, members or not of the Writers Union. Panels and literary debates, attended by writers from Bucharest, Cluj - Napoca, Baia Mare, Satu Mare, Bistriţa, come to complete this event.
Folklore Day begins with a parade of costumes (uptown), followed by a folklore performance sustained by folkloric ensembles from several counties.
We convey to the public in Vişeu the idea of 'unity in diversity' of the Romanian culture by joining songs and dances from different ethnographic regions of the country, brought along by folkloric ensembles and representative performers. Despite the notion that folklore does not attract young people, we can say that, in our case, young people are one of our target audiences, both in terms of the artistic act in itself and by reason of strengthening in their consciousness a sense of belonging to traditional values of the historical Maramureş. However, we can say that this kind of event responds to the needs of a very broad category of public, of all ages.
The International Painting Camp Impressionism on the Vaser Valley - a project part of the decentralized cooperation Vişeu de Sus-Croissy sur Seine, France
Date of organization: mid-July
The theme of the camp was chosen by taking into account artistic, touristic and heritage considerations. Thus, the cooperation with local authorities and the cultural elite of one of the most important centers of world Impressionism (Croissy-sur-Seine), particularly their high interest to participate in such a camp, where the manner and impressionistic style should translate from the banks of the Seine to the ones of the Vaser, all these entitled us to focus on impressionism.
Painters from Romania, France, Germany, Ukraine, but also guests from other countries, capture by painting the reality of the Vaser. We focus on intercultural dialogue, on emphasizing the contribution of Romanian cultural values and, at the same time, on their harmonization with European culture.
